Classic saber-rattling hides bigger Venezuela play
The latest US war posturing toward Venezuela is honestly peak Trump - the man campaigns as “no new wars” but then goes full “Department of War” mode, threatening Caracas like it’s just another season of The Apprentice: Global Edition. The reasons keep changing depending on which Fox segment you catch - first it’s the same tired “war on drugs” excuse (even though Venezuela ships barely any narcotics to the US), then suddenly it’s “they’ve got oil!” as if the US doesn’t already have access to cheaper, cleaner crude from home or Saudi Arabia. FYI, most of Venezuela’s oil is super-heavy crude, which is a nightmare to refine and way less profitable. There’s no real logic here - the oil argument is garbage, the drugs excuse is laughable, and anyone who thinks this is about fighting crime is kidding themselves. Let’s be real: this is classic power flex and distraction tactic. Trump’s got scandal smoke everywhere - Epstein files, lawsuits, you name it - so he pivots to “national emergency” mode and starts rattling sabers. Wouldn’t be shocked if he’s laying the groundwork to claim some wartime “emergency” and try to delay or suspend the 2028 elections, especially if things get messy. And the hypocrisy is off the charts: if Biden even hinted at renaming the Pentagon or grounding flights over half of South America, Fox News would be shrieking for impeachment. But when Trump talks up “special military operations” and threatens airspace from Aruba to Argentina, his base just parrots whatever talking points Hannity feeds them about “strong leadership” and “Democrats love war and taxes.” Meanwhile, the right is suddenly fine with any authoritarian move as long as it’s their guy doing it - they were literally calling for the death penalty for “disloyal” Democrats after January 6, but now they shrug off Trump’s saber-rattling because “Venezuela doesn’t matter.” The real play isn’t drugs or oil - it’s hemispheric dominance. Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s dictator, rigs his elections, snuggles up to Russia and China, and is basically the anti-US candidate, while his opponent Edmundo González Urrutia (who actually won last year’s election but was blocked from power) is way more pro-American. So the US establishment sees an easy excuse to get rid of a thorn in their side and install a friendlier puppet. But let’s not kid ourselves - there are no good guys here. Trump wants a puppet dictator, Maduro is a narco thug who’s trashed his own country and forced 9 million people to flee, and if we topple him without bothering to fix the system, Venezuela just turns into another Afghanistan - endless chaos, no democracy, more people suffering. Congress will roll over, the media will barely blink, and in the end, it’s just more American bodies and another endless war so some boomer can feel like a tough guy. War always wins out over peace in the US, no matter who’s running the circus.
