Watching Brexit spin itself into chaos

Watching The Telegraph flip-flop on Brexit is honestly wild. Back in the 2016 referendum, they were all in - running endless pieces about “taking back control,” hyping Nigel Farage and that ridiculous bus, and basically treating Brexit as the heroic move that would rescue Western democracy from the evil clutches of the EU. I remember feeling like the Leave campaign was drowning in fake news and microtargeted ads, but The Telegraph didn’t just go along with it, they doubled down. Their writers - especially Sherelle Jacobs - pumped out columns about the EU being a failed empire and how the second we left, Britain would enter some golden age. You could almost set your watch by their anti-EU editorials. Fast forward to now, and suddenly The Telegraph is publishing articles claiming Brexit is dead, Britain’s about to fall off a cliff, and maybe we should crawl back to Brussels for “security.” Even earlier this year, they ran an opinion piece by Lord Frost - yes, that’s his actual name, not a Marvel villain - insisting Brexit “liberated us” from a declining EU. It’s pure whiplash: one minute it’s “Brexit is freedom!” and the next it’s “Brexit is a disaster, blame Labour and the left for ruining it.” The narrative just shifts so they can say the Tories never delivered the real Brexit, and somehow it’s always someone else’s fault. Meanwhile, you’ve got Sherelle writing that even as a Brexiteer, maybe it’s time to cut our losses and rejoin the EU. Honestly, I can’t tell if they believe any of it or if they’re just trolling for clicks at this point. Only in the Torygraph could you get this level of mental gymnastics - from “historic people’s victory” to “Britain is doomed, better run back to Brussels” in under a decade.
