Reddit powermods built their own chaos cult
Powermod personalities on big forums are honestly wild to me, especially when you look at guys like awkwardtheturtle. For anyone who missed the drama: awkwardtheturtle was one of those Reddit mods who somehow ended up running over a thousand of the biggest subs at once. He basically acted like the Elon Musk of Reddit - pretending to juggle massive responsibilities, but really just flexing mod powers and swinging the ban hammer for the tiniest reasons. Tons of people are still locked out of subs because of his random moods and power trips, and the bans almost never got reversed. The guy never hid behind any genius moves or even the illusion of being well-adjusted - more like he was collecting bans the way other people collect hobbies. He finally got banned himself a few years ago, but there’s a whole squad of powermods just like him still lurking around. Gallowboob is another infamous one - these days he mostly posts about his dog, but he still gets blocked on sight because people remember the old days. I still see some of these ex-mods hanging out on Discord sometimes, and trust me, the personality hasn’t improved since their glory days. That’s basically the lore dump for anyone wondering why powermods get so much side-eye.
