Amnesty schemes just rewrite war crimes history
Trump’s so-called “peace plan” for Ukraine is honestly just jaw-dropping - it flat-out gives Russia total amnesty for every single war crime they committed during the invasion. I’m talking about the mass abduction of 20,000 Ukrainian kids, the massacres in Bucha and Mariupol, and all the rest. And it’s not some theoretical - this is literally written into the proposal the US passed along, basically unchanged from what Russia handed over. The idea is that if Ukraine or the EU ever signed it, they’d be forced to pretend none of those crimes even happened. Imagine having lost family, or being a survivor, and then watching the US try to sweep it all under the rug like it’s just another business deal, not a lifetime of trauma. And honestly, America has pulled this kind of thing before. After World War II, the US cut deals with Japanese war criminals - even the monsters from Unit 731, who tortured Chinese civilians in the name of “medical research” - because their data might be useful. Then, through Operation Paperclip, they scooped up Nazi scientists and engineers, some of whom had worked for the Third Reich, to help build rockets and weapons here. Not all of them were convicted at Nuremberg, but a lot of deeply unethical people got cushy jobs in the States. In the same breath, the US turned a blind eye to war crimes or commuted sentences for SS officers, all in the name of Cold War politics or “national interest.” And don’t get me started on how the US has supported or excused atrocities by dictators in Latin America when it suited their goals. So watching Trump now act like he can wave a magic wand and “pardon” Putin for crimes committed outside US law - just to play kingmaker and slap the word “peace” on it - makes my blood boil. It’s not just an empty gesture either, because if this kind of amnesty ends up in a signed agreement, it would force other countries to let Russia off the hook. I can’t believe we’re at the point where we have to spell out why this is so messed up, but apparently we do. If you’re not angry about this, you’re either not paying attention or you just don’t care. The fact that this even has to be said pretty much sums up the state of America right now.
